Dia duit, a chairde!

Lorna here from the Within the Village team.

Let me walk you through the wild and not so wild waters of Connemara, so whether you’re an adrenaline junkie looking for your next thrill or a nature lover seeking a gentle paddle, our corner of the world has something to get everyone’s feet wet (literally!).

Surfing in Connemara

Connemara’s famous Atlantic coastline offers incredible surfing opportunities no matter your surfing experience and with Connemara boasting a variety of beaches with consistent swells, that provide you with ideal conditions throughout the year.

Beginners don’t fret, you can find your footing on the gentler waves of Gurteen Beach, while more experienced surfers challenge themselves at Dunloughan and Aillebrack.

For those seeking some white knuckle level excitement, the reef break at Glassilaun presents a formidable challenge when conditions are favourable.

We recommend local business Real Adventure Connemara in Ballyconneely who offer expert instruction and equipment rental, ensuring that even novices can safely enjoy the thrill of riding Connemara’s waves.

It is safe to say that the Atlantic can be a bit nippy, even in summer.

That’s where a good wetsuit comes in handy. And for those post-surf warm-ups? Well, that’s where the latest watersport fashion accessory comes into play.
Post-Covid, dry robes have become the must-have item. They’re not just for show they’re a godsend for keeping warm after a brisk dip in the Atlantic!

Year-round Sea swimming? Absolutely, we’ve got that in spades!

But wait, there’s more!

For those who like their water activities with a side of wind, mark your calendars for the Roundstone Windsurfing Annual Extravaganza. Held on the October Bank Holiday weekend 2024, it’s a sight to behold. Keep an eye on @roundstonewindsurfingevents for all the details.

Paddling, Plunging, and Pampering

Now, if you prefer your watersports with a bit more… well, sport, you’re in for a treat. The folks at Real Adventure Connemara in Ballyconneely offer everything from coasteering (think jumping, swimming, and climbing through natural obstacles) to coastal kayak tours and stand-up paddleboarding. If it was good enough for Gordon Ramsay and Hozier on their recent visits, it’s good enough for us mere mortals!

For those who want to dive deeper (literally), scoot over to Scubadive West. This family-run business, operated by brothers Breffni and Cillian Gray, has been showing people the underwater wonders of Connemara since 1992. As a PADI 5-star dive centre, they offer everything from snorkelling to instructor training.

What’s next after your aquatic adventures?

For a touch of luxury, head to the indoor organic Seaweed Spa in Ballyconneely. With seaweed baths, treatment rooms, and an outdoor “rugged retreat” complete with beach sauna, hot tub, and cold plunge tub, it’s the perfect way to soothe your water-logged body. Check out www.ruggedretreat.ie for all the details.

If you prefer to keep things closer to home, why not book a private masseuse or yoga instructor to come right to your doorstep at Within The Village?

The lovely folks at ‘Move With Nature – Adventures in the Wild’ (@movewithnature) will have you saying “Namaste” to those post-surfing aches in no time.

Sail Away with Me

If you’re looking for a watersport that’s a little more exploratory … we suggest you hop aboard with Roundstone Bay & Island Tours.

It is run by Damien, a fourth-generation fisherman, these bespoke tours offer a unique perspective on our stunning coastline.

And the best part?

Their lobster, wine, and Guinness picnic tour. Because nothing says “I’m on holiday” quite like sipping a glass of wine on a boat in the middle of Roundstone Bay!

Warm Up and Wind Down

After all that splashing about, you’ll have worked up quite an appetite. The good news is that Connemara’s got you completely covered on the food and drink front as well.

For a hearty warm-up I suggest you head to O’Dowd’s Seafood Bar and Restaurant. Their famous chowder and fish and chips, enjoyed in front of an open fire with a pint of Guinness, is the stuff of legends. It is open all year round and is the perfect spot to thaw out those sea-chilled bones, I suggest a wee dram to warm you up.

If you’re in the mood for something a little stronger, a hot toddy or hot port might be just the ticket. Or, for those who prefer to self-cater, why not pick up some fresh crab or lobster from a local fisherman at Bunowen pier? (Just remember to bring cash – they don’t take card out on the boats!)

And let’s not forget about the neighbouring village of Ballyconneely. Pop into the Connemara Smokehouse for some of the finest smoked salmon you’ll ever taste. Trust me, it’ll ruin you for all other smoked salmon.

The Perfect End to a Perfect Day

As the sun sets on your watery adventures, head back to Within The Village. Fire up that turf fire and please pour yourself a glass from the complimentary bottle of wine in your welcome basket and regale your companions with tales of your aquatic exploits.

And if you’re still feeling that call of the sea?

There’s always tomorrow!

After all, in Connemara, the next adventure is only ever a stone’s throw away.

Slán go fóill, and may your wetsuits always be snug, your waves always be gnarly, and your aprés-sea always be warm and inviting!
